It is horrible that anyone would harm a defenseless animal this way.

It is horrible that anyone would harm a defenseless animal this way. We can't give out the details about how this happened because of an investigation but it is not something anyone would want to hear anyway. Thankfully Mikey made his way to a pet lover's house. Dina was able to get him to the vet and get him some pain meds for the time being but she can not afford to cover his total care cost. She is able to cover the majority of it but needs some help. The total cost is going to be over seven hundred dollars. Dina has managed to find a way to cover well over half of it. She needs us to help her with $235 of that. We have received $70 of it leaving $165. Dina goes out every morning to start her car so it will warm up for her trip to take her girls to school. It is normally a quick trip and she goes back in to finish getting her youngest ready while the car warms. Thursday was a little different than the normal routine though. It started out the same, but on her way back in she heard what sounded like a cry. She stopped walking and listened but didn't hear it again. Dina went back in and helped Wendy finish getting ready then yelled for Angie to come on. The three of them went out the front door. As soon as she had let the storm door close, she heard the cry again. "Did either of you hear that?" She ask the girls. "Yea", Angie answered her back. "It's a kitty behind your flowers mommy", Wendy added. Dina walked over to the edge of the house where the hedges were growing and, sure enough, behind the thickest one was a cat. It looked Dina right in the eye and as if greeting her said "meow". Dina called "here kitty kitty" but he barely moved. He looked like he was going to but just sort of rocked and stayed in the same place. Dina knew something was wrong and told Angie to get her the throw blanket from the back seat of the car. She took the blanket, hunkered down, and practically crawled over to him. He was shivering so Dina covered him with the blanket. She petted his head a little to make sure he was friendly. Once she was convinced he wasn't going to try to tear her arm off she decided to scoop him up and bring him out. She put one hand on one side and the other hand on his other side and lifted... As soon as he was off the ground he started crying and twisting until Dina just let go. She expected the kitty to run off but he didn't, he just set in the same position he was in to begin with. He looked up at her again and as if to tell her "it was ok", he said softly, "meow". Dina knew something was bad wrong. She decided to take a different approach. She crawled out and went in the house and got a box and cut the front out of it. She then went back out and took the box with her this time. She got back to where the kitty was setting taking the box with her. She turned the box so the opening was toward the kitty then very easily lifted his front half with one hand and scooted the box under him then just as easily lifted the back and scooted him on into the box. After she got out of the bush and on her feet she told the girls to get in the back seat. She set the box in the passenger seat where she could keep an eye on her new friend.

Dina had already decided to take the kitty to the veterinarian after she dropped the girls at school. She also decided if no one claimed him that they would keep the kitty. They had two dogs but her husband had taken them with him during the divorce in June and she thought it may be good for the girls to have a pet and may help take their mind off of the recent split. She didn't tell the girls though because she didn't know what was wrong with the baby yet. On their way to the school Wendy proclaimed "His name is Mikey!". "Why do you say that?" Dina asked. "That's just what it is" Wendy answered. "OK" , Dina replied. Wendy was always naming and renaming pets, animals, toys, and dolls so Dina didn't give much thought to her naming the kitty.

Dina had a lot to do and the clinic was pretty busy so she filled out the paper work and ask if she could come back around noon. They told her that would be fine. When Dina got home she decided to check with the neighbors to see if any of them were missing their pet. She called the ones she had numbers for and went to the houses of the ones she didn't but no one claimed him. Dina didn't get anything she planned done because she spent the entire time Mikey was at the clinic looking for an owner. She went back to the clinic at noon and found out what was wrong. Mikey has a severely broken hind leg. It is practically snapped completely in two. The reason it hurt so badly when she picked him up is because it was dangling, with just the skin holding it on, and the weight of the lower part of the leg pulling down on it was excruciatingly painful for Mikey when he was picked up with nothing supporting the leg. The doctor bandaged the leg to hold it in place and gave Mikey some very strong medication. He is going to need surgery to repair it though and it may have to be removed completely if something is not done soon. The other choice is to euthanize him. Dina definitely does not want that to happen and neither do we.

Dina took care of Thursday's vet visit and paid for Mikey's medicine but in her current situation she can not afford surgery. She barely makes enough money at her part time job to pay the utilities. She did qualify for a small amount of care credit which is how she paid for Mikey's visit but not enough to cover surgery. She has ask us if we can help get Mikey the care he needs. We want to help but we can only do that with the assistance of fellow pet lovers.
